What We Do
What we do is hard to define as our job is not to end homelessness but to end hopelessness. How do you end hopelessness? By getting to know people without judgement and condemnation and by becoming their friend- by showing them that we truly and honestly care about who they are. We demonstrate to them that we see them as real people, not just as trash sitting on the sidewalk. We learn their stories. These stories are all unique but a common plot line runs through most of them- a plot of hurts, pains and disappointments, but also of desires and passions. Our goal is to come alongside them as they walk through life and be there to support them as they navigate through the frustrations and barriers in life on the streets. When someone does make the decision that they want to get out and change their life we help them to make that change and start achieving their hopes and dreams.
This all started by our bringing food downtown to the homeless on Saturday nights. We were also sometimes able to bring down goodies like sleeping bags, tents, and blankets, when we were blessed with them, as they are some of the things that are needed to survive on the streets. Saturday nights have since evolved to a regular BBQ down in Centennial Square. It has turned into a time to see old friends and new faces and also a time to let old friends know that we are here and still care, as well as a chance to make new friends. As we share the food, they share about their life and week and we have the opportunity to set up coffee or lunch dates. Those one on one times give us an opportunity for them to open up their hopes, dreams and life stories and for us to help give them the hope that those dreams are attainable and can become a reality by offering steps and strategies on how to achieve them.
Getting to know how God sees them and guiding and encouraging them towards receiving Christ is a big part of helping them achieve this life change as well as the practical steps they need to take towards improving their lives.
This is just a glimpse into what we are doing to help end hopelessness. It is hard to define and box up hope to then just hand out; as hope is often a small seed buried within a person that through time and love is watered and allowed to grow into a blossoming tree. As you will see from reading our Live’s Changed page the fruit of our efforts and persevering love has led to some real miracles of redemption for many people.
